Compression

Ive left that Duetz stand for a couple of weeks now, yeasterday i went to start it, and it had lost all compression, after a thew cranks it soon came back, but is this normal, cheers

No, have you a sticky valve, is it smoking a lot ?

but then runs fine, any ideas what i should do chris, could this be a problem ????????

depends if putting oil into the cylinder makes a difference, in which case, could be rings or valves. when its running, the oil and fuel in the bore, and the carbon help to improve the seal, when it stands, the seal weakens as the fuel and oil soak past the rings

Put a set of rings in it, you can get things to run still if valves are sticking. When it stands just depends on were the valves are ,when I stop al my engines I always turn them over until both vales are shut

i agree, put new rings in and hone the bore,

Then to preserve the engine, when the engines deing stopped, turn it upto compression to shut the valves, and then you could even go as far as sealing the inlet and exhaust up with clingfilm. a little drop of oil down the bore doesnt durt either.

but, when we was at the blowdown there was dust and grit everywere, i ran the duetz without the valve cover so people could look, i think dirt may have got into the valves causing them to jam, so i got her running again and sprayed wd40 onto the valves and good news, not losing compression now
