Work on the JAP 2A
As promised I am posting some pics of the J. A. Prestwich 2A which is now starting to come together.
It was bought in this condition with half an HT lead, a holed exhaust, and paint that had been applied with a yard brush.

The engine was not siezed but due to the lack of an HT lead it was difficult to assess the condition. Once the HT lead was repaired it gives off a nice big fat spark so, touch wood, she should be a runner as there is plenty of compression and some nice exhaust pops when turned over. The starting pulley was also chewed up where someone had used a chisel to try to remove the flywheel, presumably to fix the HT lead. As they had failed miserably, the pulley has been replaced. All of the tinware has been removed and taken back to bare metal with a wire brush in the drill. Red Oxide was brush painted on and then flatted and sprayed with..... Yes, I decided to keep the red colour as most of my other engines are green so it makes it stand out a little bit.
Here's the tank hanging up to dry

The fan shroud now painted

The tank brackets (straps still in primer as these will be black)

I have replaced the exhaust and cleaned up the block. Just the air filter to sort out before putting everything back together.

Re: Work on the JAP 2A
Looking good, I must get my 2a finished, I managed to pick up a set of rings for it last year and the vavles need doing as it is very low in compression. In fact the rings would have been done if I could of found my socket, I couldn't so started to do something else

That's always the way. I might have to strip this one again yet as I haven't had it running. Luckily I have got another 2A which I use for spares.

Put it all back together this morning. Just waiting for the air filter to dry.

Think I'll have to take the carb off next week and give it a good clean. Probably end up making new gaskets like I had to for the Briggs & Stratton

Re: Work on the JAP 2A
There a nice small engine to work on Neville not to complicated. Some of the early engines bring good money for a small engine (£75-£80) and can be picked up cheaply. Also a lot have a generator or water pump attached so your all set to show.

Re: Work on the JAP 2A
Mine's actually a 2S which is basically a 2A with a larger tank and a bigger sump designed for longer running applications. They are a nice engine to own if you can find one.....
