How to test a condensor

An easy way to test them is to connect the pig tail to the positive terminal of a 12 volt battery and the body to the negative terminal. This charges them up. Now ground the pig tail to the body and, if it is good, you should see a nice fat spark. In some cases the condenser will have two leads. One goes to ground and one to the points hot wire. Connect them by the color coding of the wires. If both wires have the same color, they can be connected either way. Same way to test. One wire to positive and one wire to negative to charge and then touch them together. You should get a nice spark if they are good.

all a condenser is a small capacitor after all. When i used to be a forklift technician we used to find some capacitor's that was around 3" thick and 6" long . used to play a trick by charging them up and leaving them on the bench for the intended victim when the touched the contacts OUTCH ! was a bit cruel but all a bit of a laugh

they did it to me with a small one so i found the biggest one i could find a few weeks later in pay back

yrs ago i was holding 2 steel combine shed doors inline for welding the hinges on,
he welded the first fine
then moved over to do the other
buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz though my arms and chest
and he said you ok you look white mate what is it ????
did you forget to move the earth over to the side your welding
replied sorry mate forgot that bit
u ok though this is a 3 phase welder lol lo
i had stiff musles for over a month after and burns on my fingers and palms
ouch wont do that again in a hurry

Hi fellas. Easy condensor test for points/coil ignition system. If engine running bad and running improves by opening up points gap - condensor stuffed. If it improves by closing up the points gap - coil stuffed. Old school testing from workshop days. Cheers, Derb.
