trolley building

I'm working on my fourth trolley at the moment, one for a Lister D

The woodwork is not too much of a problem as i have the use of a workshop belonging to a retired wheelwright

my first attempt was a trolley for a small pillar drill





i used some new caster wheels on that one..........

next i did one for the Petter A1





which i was reasonably pleased with considering it only cost me about 25 quid to build

next i did a similar one for a water pump .........cost about the same



now for the Lister D I bought 2 fence posts for 6 quid and made this



now, being new to all this i spent a lot of time looking at pictures of engines to see what trolleys looked like and then designed my own to suit what they needed to carry.....................

my problem is I can only see the top in pictures....................bearing in mind i don't have a workshop with metalworking machines the thing is how to attach the axles to the trolley, the only solution i have at the moment is to make a wooden jig to hold the bits in place and weld lugs onto the axles then bolt them on



it seems to work quite well but i was wondering how other people did theirs, i don't like the idea of just drilling holes through the wood and pushing the axles through, never looks strong enough to me .........

Kev i can see some clamps that go round the axle............. my problem is i don't have any way of making them or anywhere to buy them for different size axles i guess my way of welding them is the best i can do.

my lister axles are 20 and 22 mm steel to fit the wheels that i was given, i spent a lot of today making a jig to weld lugs on to the axles the jigs only last for a few welds then the wood catches fire

this is for a villiers 25 tvo this was my first trolley build blind like you were








wood stain for the hardwood look as made from pallet wood its preweathhered wood so helps with less distortin and sap leakage through the varnishing



finished off wood with a good quality yacht varnish for depth and shine also fuel oil and weather proof well if its designed for the sea decks its good enough for a field lol



the axles are from forktrucks like parcel men use and fitted using steel wall u clamps for conducit screwed on the under side of wood as things get bigger
go to coach bolts rite through the wood and top ,smooth dome on the visual side with the square pulled into the wood so you can tighten iy good and tight underneath out of sight from the puplic

if you have a welder that way is best like you are making
sorry i thought you were like me with no acess to a welder set
just make them as square as you can with the jigs and then when on bottom of trolley loose
square them up to the trolley and then do a diagnal check to axle ends so it will roll in a strieght line and be more in ballance

my brother used to be a coded welder in a ship yard ..........he does all my welding

we have a small welding machine at the workshop

sounds a handy man to know
say to him when hes finished this project with you

my dad used to be coded welder years back and got that comment alot
his weld was ammazing so see and even old cowtroughs to vaci tanks and factory and barn building

What you need Neville is the end parts of the bolt (don't know what you call them) or make some by bending some metal around the axle, it need not be very thick.

HI KEV..
those wheels look like there from the trolleys that you see alot a shows,they are either filled with bits,or children or dogs etc..you wernt selling the remains on eBay were you...
looks like both of you are busy building..

no not me MIKE
they could be fitted to lots of things like that
but mine came of sack trucks returned broken to focus and payed a £5 for the 2 complete trucks
keeped the axles and wheels, weighed in the rest and got £3 back ,,all good lol

conducit from builders yards comes in 20 and 24mm not shore about 22mm though,
perhaps a thin rubber stripe would take up the play if there was any
