Lister A drain tap thread help !

Post  matt86 on Sat Dec 10, 2011 8:53 pm

My lister A has a stripped thread in the hopper , tried a few things and do not now what else i could do .

i have tried lots of PTFE tape , a ring of solder behind the tap shoulder , copper washers etc but i can just get a bite but will not tighten up !

There is not much metal to drill out and recut for a bigger tap . The size is currently 3/8 bsp .

Any idea on what i could do next would be greatly appreciated .

regards , matt

you do realise that is me as well asking that question on fozzers do you ?

Thanks for the help i have ordered a 1/2" tap and the correct pilot drill . A 1/2" to 3/8" bush as well . once i got all those bits i will be able to sort out that bodge once and for all !

I used to be able to screw a tap in there ok , but had to pack it with a ring of solder . Today i finished assembling the engine again and when i went to screw the tap in , it just wouldn't play ball !

Matt I've used plastic metal in the past and it worked well no leaks and strong enough to use the tap without it comming off in your hand. I know it's not what I wanted, as I wanted to drill/re-tap but the hole was going to be to big to try and hold a drill level and get a perfect round hole to tap.
