a bit of history

Post  earlsinclare on Thu May 03, 2012 7:48 pm

i have doing a bit of research on these engines.

petter 5hp, date despatched 05.12.1947 to Walker Bros, Cumberland

petter a1, date despatched 04.09.1947 to R.Yates & Sons, Malton,Yorkshire.

i'm always amazed how some engines only travel a few miles in all their lives, i bought the petter a1 from a bloke in york who said he found it local (malton is only 10 miles from york). this engine has probably travelled less than 75miles in 65 years.

Very interesting Richard, have you tried to find out what the original owners did as work or are they just farms that had the engines as back up for the dairy palour. My WD8 was new to a farmer near Carlisle and it worked there all it's life till his sons got the engine once the farm was sold and they rallied it for a few years and I bought it of one of the sons who lived at Newby Bridge, South Cumbria.

So it looks as if that was sold to a farmer Richard.

i thought i mite try and contact the company and ask if they have any records dating from then.
if you don't ask you'll never find out.

Worth a try but a lot of records were dumped when computers were introduced.

Good luck with the search.
