Hi Sawtooth, there is another thread where you were welcomed on to the forum.
If there's anything we can help you with please don't be shy and ask as many questions as you want if your thinking about getting yout first engine we will try our best to help a steer you in the right direction. There's nothing worse then going out and buying an engine when you don't have to much knowledge and then wonder if you've done the right thing. The worse thing is buying your first engine that's in need of a major restoration, this is where a lot loss interest as parts can take a long time to find and can be expensive.
My suggestion is go for a runner, the common ones and best starter engines being Petter A1, Lister D or a Wolseley WD all of these engines are common and easy to restore, parts reasonably easy to find and not to expensive. Saying that a good mag for a Lister D could cost you more then you pay for the engine. Then once your up and running then go for the engine of your dreams so by then you should have the basic knowledge of what to look out for.
Where abouts in the World are you as there maybe a forum member local that has something for sale or could help you find something.
Hope this helps,
Stu.

I have to agree with Mike Devon is a good source for engines, alot of good stuff turns up in the Bristol area, might be a bit far but it's there to be bought and good looking stuff.
