Banned for Spamming etc

Post  stationary stu on Tue Jul 05, 2011 4:58 pm

I don't know who he is but think it was some kind of attack on the forum. He's now banned and all his posts deleted and if you've got any emails or pm's from him please ignore/delete DO NOT GO TO HIS EMAIL ADDRESS.

Stu as a moderator on a forum much busier than this one, i can say how spam free this forum is, i must have ordered the deletion of at least 300 members in the last year or so Shocked
the most recent type of spam regards what looks like legit members who will reply to a topic with a spam post located in their signature advertising whatever web site they represent ........hoping to pass as genuine members

EG you will get a post saying something like "nice engine" or "i have one like that"...........with a sig added to the profile advertising what they are really here for.

or they will look totally legit and make no posts ...........or maybe 1 post that looks OK, but they will have a website listed in their profile that forwards their interests.............ever looked at those bots scanning the site at the bottom of the page .......................search results at google, bing ect rely on how well publicised a site may be to be in the rankings..........those crawler bots are looking for among other things links to other sites

i'm not trying to interfere with the way this site is managed..............just passing on my knowledge of how it is

regards Neville

Neville, thanks very much for the info, lets start by saying touch wood this site has got away with spamming very well. I myself are on different forums and the spam they are hit with every morning is quite a bit compared to ourselves, this week has been the worst that I've know of. I think it's as the site has grown in popularity and like you say anyone googling engines or a related world is getting to this site now thus bringing the spam. My only worry is someone that's not too worldly goes to an infected site.

As for the advertising along the bottom I think that call has to be made by Paul (Rab) as the site owner, I'm sure he'll read this and let us know his decision if he wants to allow it to continue of not, thanks for pointing it out as I'd never noticed it.

What I want to know is why do they bother even having to join a forum before they can start to spam.? The first one this week I wasn't sure of at first then after 28 posts all reading the same I got to thinking this is not right Laughing Laughing Laughing

Your right Mike why some saddos gets pleasure out of causing others grief I can't understand, it's not as if they know who they are affecting or have a grudge with them it's normally people that don't have a lot of knowledge about computers and it's there only link to the outside world. Instead of enjoying something you have to be on your gaurd all them time.

simple, they get paid a small amount for each link they post, either that or its their own site\business they are advertising.

like most things it revolves around money.
