Petter A1 restore

Post  Chippie on Thu Mar 17, 2011 10:16 pm

Hi all,

I recently acquired 2 Petter A1 engines, havent picked them up yet so dont really know what sort of 'nick' they are in...

What I do know is that both are missing a magneto each as well as silencers...

I'll be refurbishing one of them definitely and maybe splitting the other or spares...We'll see...

So, if anyone has any pointers or do's'n'dont's I'd appreciate the offer of any advice you may have to offer...

Pictures will be forthcoming as soon as I have the engines back home..

Quick update..

I've got one of the engines stripped ready to rebuild...I've got a new head gasket and a bottom end gasket set, new seals would be great for the crank...

The piston has a couple of bad scores on the skirt on the thrust side..Umm maybe not a worry...The flywheel key is in a sorry state after being butchered, I can make an new one...
The main bearings look in fair shape.
I'd like to recut the valve seats and face up the valves..

Other than that, it just needs a good clean, perhaps shot blasting and repainting.

I need other parts to complete this one tho'..
I'm hopeful of getting a carb/tank and starting handle, with a bit of luck I might get lucky and acquire a suitable magneto..hint hint....failing that a suitable flange for a Wico A would really help out as I already have a mag from another engine that I bought from Eb*y...

fotos to follow..

Paul, the flywheel literally flew off.........

I had to make up a puller to remove the gib key which came out relatively easy and then the flywheel just needed a little persuasion...I guess the prolonged soak with WD40 aided removal.

No hammers were subject to abuse during this excercise.
