fowler pa

Post  earlsinclare on Sun Jan 02, 2011 7:31 pm

the engine had low compression but i noticed some air bubbles in the hopper, so off with its head only to find that it was still the original gasket that had been re-used and had been stuck down with lots of instant gasket. i'm now waiting for the head gasket material to arrive so that i can make a new one.

Hi Richard.

you lucky beggar!

i too have a 1PA, yours has the bigger hopper fitted, but both engines are essentially the same.

theres lots to check on it because many of the components were built down to price and make for a restorers headache!

the carb might leak, or cause erratic running, you just need to flatten the mating surfaces down accurately.

frost damage to the block is not uncommen either, so look out for rust stains when it warms up.

Dave at stationary engines scotland has an extensive knowledge, as does phillip Thornton-Evison.

aside from that best of luck!

Cheers.

Paul

a new head gasket.

Post  earlsinclare on Sun Jan 16, 2011 6:16 pm

the head gasket material has finally arrived between slow ebay sellers and the royal 'snail' mail it took the best part of 3 weeks. just need to cut a new one and refit the head. i have reground the valves and cleaned up the cylinder, hopefuly this will improve the compression. then its time to decide to repaint or not.

Hi Earl,

Best of luck with the head gasket hope all works out for you.

As for painting it, well theres a question, I would leave it as it is but others would say paint it.

Thats a question that only the owner knows as its down to personal prefrance.

Paul
cheers cheers

its not original paint, it has been repainted at some time in the past, the quality of the paintwork is not the best but i have seen worse.

good stuff,

i believe frank gelder does the correct exhaust for it, the one with the squashed end on (though not all had that btw) but not sure on the price, you may actually be able to adapt the one it has to a more fowler like appearance Smile

Post  earlsinclare on Thu Feb 10, 2011 7:29 am

i've decided to repaint the fowler, after looking at it for too long you start to see more bits you don't like. so its out with the painting stuff and start the prep.
thanks Earl.
